One Fragment of Ancient Weapon Found, 763 to Go
"We would still need the Handle of Maarg, the Jewels of the Ten, the Scabard of Times Lost, and the Certificate of Authenticity."
Local adventurer, Tours Gerthfeil, discovered one of the 764 fabled fragments of Severslash, Greatsword of Oblivion, while exploring early Wednesday. The sword, said to be a relic of the Lost Age, was rumored to have been split into fragments do to undeveloped plot reasons. The fragment was found in the Crypt of The Wyrmlich while Gerthfeil’s party was searching for clues to his missing family. “We weren’t exactly sure what is was when Tours brought it to me,” says party sage Alphrum Beardmane. “I had to use a whole spell slot to Identify the fragment,” explains the magic user, rueful of what it revealed. “If I knew it would lead to a long side quest, I would have saved the slot for Magic Missile instead.”
Regarding the possibility of collecting other fragments, Beardmane was skeptical. “If it means I have to use a whole pearl each time we find a piece of steel, I have a feeling we’re not going to find many more. They might get misplaced before I have an open spell slot.” Members of The Dungeon Tribune didn’t have the heart to tell Beardmane that he didn’t need to consume a pearl for each cast of Identify.
The group’s scout, Vaill Krist, is more hopeful about the possibility of some use coming from the find though. “Maybe we won’t find all of the fragments,” says Krist. “But, I don’t know, maybe we can find enough of the fragments to make a dagger, or a cool short sword? I’d even take a few arrowheads.”
Gerthfeil, himself, is looking forward to seeking the additional fragments: “I’m sure spending the time to assemble the sword will help us…what were we doing? Oh yeah, find my family. I’m sure they can wait.” Significant effort as already been spent planning various routes throughout the world to cover as much ground as possible. “I figure we can skip all the easy dungeons, I doubt there will be any fragments in them. Perhaps we’ll find some in some private collections that we’ll have to steal, or maybe even barter for. Hopefully we’ll get lucky and another group of adventurers has collected a good chunk of them.”
Other group members aren’t very excited about the possibility of a new quest. “We have like 20 unresolved storylines,” complains the group’s bard, Bood Dislow. “Besides, a quest for a magical item they won’t let me use? No thanks.” Front line melee fighter, Ivez Skornta, is hesitant as well and told reporters that she “doesn’t even know what the sword does.” Reports indicate that Skornta was told the weapon’s properties, but she wasn’t listening.
Even if the group can collect all the fragments together, there are still other steps to assembling the fabled two-hander. “We would still need the Handle of Maarg, the Jewels of the Ten, the Scabard of Times Lost, and the Certificate of Authenticity,” complains Gerthfeil, forgetting that he hadn’t found a blacksmith to repair it yet. But he wouldn’t stop with just the sword. “Sure, it’s optional and don’t really affect the sword in any meaningful way, but I would have to get the epic skin too. I hear it only requires collecting a couple thousand essence tokens.”
